We need accurate information to protect ourselves and our loved ones, to identify and treat the disease, and to find a vaccine or cure for the disease. Although there is so much information out there, some people cannot access it and, consequently, are at a disadvantage.<\/p><p>This\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/translatebyhumans.com\/blog\/10-things-that-need-to-be-made-accessible-during-a-worldwide-health-emergency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">worldwide health emergency<\/a>\u00a0has brought many language access problems in healthcare to light.\u00a0The non-profit news publication\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/hospitals-have-left-many-covid19-patients-who-dont-speak-english-alone-confused-and-without-proper-care\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">ProPublica surveyed 11\u00a0New York City health care workers<\/a>\u00a0about their experiences caring for non-English speaking coronavirus patients. \u201cThey\u2019re worried that language barriers will leave immigrants with COVID-19 in a particularly dire situation: alone, confused, and without the appropriate care,\u201d reports ProPublica.<\/p><p>However, in this article, we are going to focus on the silver lining. And this is why Professor Harith Alani of the Knowledge Media Institute at the Open University, UK, is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/research-and-innovation\/en\/horizon-magazine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">collecting false coronavirus stories<\/a>\u00a0along with his team.<\/p><p>Their project, called Health Emergency Response in Interconnected Systems (HERoS), aims to analyse how some European and Asian cities and countries are handling COVID-19 concerning public communication. This will eventually help them understand how the pandemic can be dealt with with improved governance.\u00a0<\/p><p>However, the project focuses on the official languages of the countries, thereby not considering the citizens who speak non-official languages.\u00a0Sharon O\u2019Brien, a professor at Dublin City University in Ireland, and her team is working on\u00a0a project called INTERACT (<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/view\/crisistranslation\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">International Network on Crisis Translation<\/a>). These resources include videos about the serious nature of the disease, essential prevention techniques, and social distancing, and more.
