A recruitment coordinator\u2019s job is to coordinate all hiring activities across various regions. I have been managing the hiring processes across Europe \u2013 which includes ensuring all candidate information is updated and in place, setting up interviews, team briefs for discussing the candidates, etc. I have been hiring for specific roles in the Operations team like General Managers.\u00a0<\/p><p>I was also involved in\u00a0numerous contingency hirings as we hire people (say, mechanics) to work in our warehouses in many regions. In some countries, like India, English is the\u00a0lingua franca \u2013 the language of all official communication. However, European countries use their respective <a href=\"https:\/\/translatebyhumans.com\/en\/languages\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">local languages<\/a> for all business-related and official communication. The regional languages hold more power over English. So, we ensure that our on-ground team can communicate in the local language of the region they\u2019re operating in. This way, they\u00a0can communicate effectively with both \u2013 their\u00a0offshore\u00a0teams and their customers.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8b5b106 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"8b5b106\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">4: Have you noticed any differences in feedback from bilingual employees or their onboarding?<\/h4>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ee62f38 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ee62f38\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Vishakha<\/strong><\/p><p>We do all our onboarding in English. But what I\u2019ve noticed is the fact that bilingual\/multilingual employees come with some amazingly diverse cultural experiences. These experiences help them to interact better with local resources.<\/p><p>For instance, Dutch is a language that, to a non-native speaker, can come across as straightforward. However, to a person who has lived in the\u00a0Netherlands, it is easy to understand why the Dutch prefer to interact the way they do.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7993e03 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"7993e03\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">5: Is knowing a local language non-negotiable at your organisation?\n<\/h4>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-67526a5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"67526a5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Vishakha<\/strong><\/p><p>When it comes to hiring for Operations teams, the\u00a0lack of\u00a0linguistic abilities of candidates become a deal-breaker.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-92a5955 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"92a5955\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">6: Besides Operations, is there any other team\/department where multilingual employees are a necessity?<\/h4>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-adb0c65 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"adb0c65\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Vishakha<\/strong><\/p><p>Yes. We have a Government Relations &amp; Public Affairs team that works together with city councils and legislation. For us to launch and implement the use of micro-mobility devices, we need a set of permissions from concerned government bodies, and that involves lobbying. In such a team, an employee who can communicate well with government officials in their local language, becomes an asset.<\/p><p>We don\u2019t have team heads in each country.\u00a0So it helps to be multilingual, especially when\u00a0team heads are asked to travel to other countries and manage things there. For instance, one of our heads speaks seven languages. That may not necessarily mean he is fluent in each of them, but he conveys his message correctly in\u00a0all seven.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bab2ded elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"bab2ded\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">7: Are there any specific payment policies for multilingual employees?<\/h4>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3b2f6b1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3b2f6b1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Vishakha<\/strong><\/p><p>No, there are no differences in terms of compensation provided to multilingual employees.<\/p><p>We prefer to hire people speaking at least one local language \u2013 it\u2019s not a policy.\u00a0<\/p><p>When we post a job requirement online, we ask candidates to mention language proficiency. That way we can filter out the candidates who are not proficient in a local language.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ccd3aba elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"ccd3aba\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">8: When did the team realise that they must hire multilingual employees?<\/h4>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-022af89 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"022af89\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Vishakha<\/strong><\/p><p>I think it was at the\u00a0time when we decided to launch in Europe that we realised we needed people with multilingual abilities. Our American employees couldn\u2019t handle things there\u00a0as\u00a0efficiently.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1dc6f60 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"1dc6f60\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">9: Is putting such people together is counter-productive? Any challenges?<\/h4>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6515e4f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6515e4f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>\u00a0Vishakha<\/strong><\/p><p>As per what I\u2019ve observed, there are sometimes little gaps in communication between people who speak a local language fluently and those who can speak just English.\u00a0<\/p><p>For instance, we had a team brief about a candidate we had interviewed. Usually, we\u00a0would\u00a0ensure that the interview panel is a mix of people who speak a variety of languages. As it turned out, at that time, the interview panel had three people who spoke German. While discussing the interview, they started having an intense conversation in German. We had to interrupt them and ask them to talk in English only. They struggled to <a href=\"https:\/\/translatebyhumans.com\/en\/services\/translation\/english\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">translate in English<\/a> and tell us what they were saying earlier.<\/p><p>We had held a summit where everybody \u2013 150 to 200 employees \u2013 came to Amsterdam. One of my Romanian colleagues has applied to take Spanish lessons.
